If you are moving to Maryland and interested in getting into the medical field, there are four hospitals that have announced that they will be hiring 1,000 entry-level workers. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Medstar Health, Mercy Health Services, and the University of Maryland Medical System are the four medical facilities that will begin hiring in January of 2016.

The initiative, which has been named the Health Employment Program, was created to increase the number of entry-level positions within Maryland hospitals, therefore helping to stabilize the community. Because these Maryland hospitals make up a large portion of the employer sector, they believe that they can make a difference in creating more jobs for people moving to Maryland.

According to the initiative’s goals, those who are hired into each entry-level job will have an opportunity to move up within the industry after a certain amount of time. This is great news if you are moving to Maryland and have a desire to begin a career in the medical field, but do not have any experience.

Although Maryland hospitals are not kept from hiring entry-level workers on their own, the four major facilities believe that combining their hiring efforts and creating an initiative out of it, will drive down the cost of what hiring new workers would be. Therefore, giving each hospital the ability to hire even more entry-level workers than they would be able to if they were hiring on their own.

The State of Maryland has created several solar incentives that have made moving to Maryland even more desirable. Although several states have jumped on the “Go Green” bandwagon and have begun encouraging residents to use solar power as opposed to traditional electricity, it seems as if Maryland is ahead of the curve and riding the solar power wave in a big way. According to one of the largest residential solar energy companies, Renewable Energy Corporation, the state of Maryland offers four different solar incentives to residents who choose to use solar power in their home.

Here’s what our Maryland movers want you to know about solar incentives in Maryland:

  • Clean Energy Production Tax Credit- Depending on how much electricity your solar system generates, the state of Maryland offers a tax credit. The more electricity a solar system generates, the more credit a homeowner is allowed to claim on their state income tax.
  • Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Equipment- If you move to Maryland and decide to purchase solar energy equipment, all materials will be exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales and use tax.
  • Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Residential Solar and Wind Electricity Sales- If you choose to sell any electricity generated by your renewable energy equipment in your home, you and the buyer of the electricity are exempt from having to pay Maryland state sales and use tax.
  • Residential Clean Energy Grant Program- If you decide to move to Maryland and use renewable energy equipment, the state of Maryland will give you (the homeowner) up to $500 for the installation of a solar hot water heater and up to $1,000 for investing in solar panels.

School Superintendent for Anne Arundel County revealed a $1.1 billion budget this week.

If you are a teacher and you will be moving to Maryland, local moving companies want you to be aware of the 33 new teaching positions that will be available for the 2016 school year in Anne Arundel County.

On top of creating new teaching positions to match the increasing rate of enrollment, the budget will allow for additional support for English language learners and $3.1 million towards the expansion of magnet programs.

$11.8 million of the $1.1 billion will go towards education salary increases as well, although it has not been determined exactly how much more each individual will get.

$739,000 will go towards purchasing bus routing software for more efficient routes, and an analyst to run it.

$2.5 million will be allocated for the expansion of Arlotto’s elementary education program to reach the Meader, Chesapeake, and Southern clusters.

Alex Szachnowicz of the Chief Operating Office, says that the 2016 education budget is “reasonable” and “responsible”, although he mentions that it is still not enough to cover everything that “department heads asked for”.

If you have moved to Maryland since this past October, keep an ear open for changing school times for your children.

In October, a group of residents brought a proposal to the Board of Education that would change school start times, and with local high schools starting class at 7:17 a.m., their concerns are understandable.

Since local schools’ start times are among the earliest in the state, the group of fifteen concerned residents proposed four options:

  • Push back high school start times to 8:30 a.m. and middle school start times to 9:30 a.m. Change elementary school start times from anytime between 7:50 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. This plan would cost $8.8 million.
  • Push back high school start times to 9:15 a.m. and middle school start times to anywhere between 8:20 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with one high school starting at 9:00 a.m. Switch elementary school times to begin anywhere between 7:40 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., costing the total plan around $9.4 million.
  • Push back every schools’ start time to 30 minutes later than its current start time, and have the latest elementary classes start at 9:55 a.m. This plan would cost $600,000.
  • Push back every schools’ start time by 30 minutes and allow the option for students to take online classes as a “late-start hybrid option” for two of the high schools. This plan would cost $2.1 million for the hybrid program.

Option number three is currently the most popular option among parents, faculty, and after-school care programs and facilities. However, the polled numbers for changing school times has not shown enough support for the idea.

Maryland resident and advocate for the group Start Schools Later, says that the Board of Education really needs to get on board with the idea, since research from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that high school students develop sleep patterns in which staying up late makes it essential for them to sleep in a little later. Due to a lack of sleep, high school students may not be functioning to their fullest capabilities so early in the morning, a fact that could prove detrimental to their early morning learning.

If you and your family are moving to Maryland, family-owned local moving companies suggest that you go online and see which schools will be closest to your new home and check their start times, you may want to house hunt in an area that has an ideal school start time for your child(ren).

The House of Representatives is currently sitting on a bill that would approve $1.1 trillion in federal spending funds, of which roughly $500 million would go to Maryland transportation initiatives.

The $1.1 trillion is aimed at keeping the federal government afloat through September of 2015, except for the Department of Homeland Security, a move by House Republicans to shut off aid to the President’s executive order on deportation relief.

A local Maryland moving company has a brief breakdown on how Maryland’s millions would be spent:

  • 1% cost of living increase for a number of Maryland’s 300,000 federal employees
  • A percentage to the state’s air traffic control
  • $100 million towards the Red Line light-rail project
  • $280 million towards the transit line that connects Woodlawn to East Baltimore
  • Aid to keep Easton, Frederick, and Hagerstown airports open for another year.
  • $46 million to dredge channels and shipping lanes that lead to the port of Baltimore
  • Aid to reduce the amount of backlogs of rape kits at police departments

If you are moving to Maryland by the end of the year, the House of Representatives are coming to a vote this week on the $1.1 trillion plan, so you, as well as current residents, could see a lot more transportation routes and increased transportation availability in 2015.

If you are looking to move to Maryland, local moving companies want you to know that now may be the best time to buy.

According to a report by RealEstate Business Intelligence, the median sales price for Maryland homes was $230,000. The report also showed that the drop was roughly a four percent decrease since just last month. However, the overall average prices for the year were relatively the same as those of 2013.

According to RBI’s reported figures, the number of homes sold in November 2014, closely relate to the report from 2013, with only an additional 79 homes being sold; reflecting only a six percent increase.

President of the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors Ross Mackesey, says that although these numbers are good, it is important to know that the majority of the homes that are being bought at such low prices, are foreclosed or bank-owned properties. So the numbers do not reflect the prices of newly built, never owned homes. Mackesey says that out of the additional 79 homes that were bought and reflected in the report’s numbers, 54 of them were foreclosed or bank-owned (also known as “distressed”) properties.

Nonetheless, if you are currently looking to move to Maryland, you may want to finally put a bid in on the house that you have been contemplating on, before the average price increases again.
