All drivers are well aware of the risk that they take when they operate a cell phone while driving. It only takes a split second of distraction for an accident to occur and injuries to be sustained by you or another vehicle.

The majority of the states across the U.S. have adopted a no texting and driving law. If you are moving to Maryland from one of the six states that does not penalize cell phone use while driving, or a state that does not reinforce the law with a harsh penalties, then you need to make sure when entering the state of Maryland that you kindly put your phone away while driving.

This past year, Maryland has been tightening the reins on hand-held phone use while driving even more. The law prohibiting hand-held phone use while driving has been in effect since 2010. However, starting October 1st, you can find yourself facing a heftier charge. So for those of you who violate this law, you may want to reconsider using your cell phone while driving because soon enough you can expect a year in jail as well as a substantial fine for any injury or death resulting accident.

Putting the risk of jail and the $5000 fine aside, is texting, calling, posting, or any activity on your phone more important than your life or the life of another?

Keep your personal safety and the safety of others in mind when reaching for your cell phone while driving.

10 Maryland schools are about to be recognized as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

Those in the list include:

– Frost Elementary School in Allegany County

– Linthicum Elementary School in Anne Arundel County

– Western School of Technology & Environmental Science in Baltimore County

– Northern Garrett High School in Garrett County

– Cashell Elementary School in Montgomery County

– Robert Goddard French Immersion Elementary/Middle School in Prince George’s County

– Immaculate Conception School in Baltimore County

– Our Lady of Grace School in Baltimore County

– School of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore City

– Mount Aviat Academy in Cecil County

The program recognizes schools that exhibit sustained high performance and/or significant improvement in student achievement in mathematics and reading as measured by Maryland State Assessments. They are also nominated to become National Blue Ribbon Schools, an awards program of the U.S. Department of Education.

There are two assessment categories that must be met prior to being selected as a Blue Ribbon School:

Category 1 includes high achieving schools. These schools must score in the top 10% of all Maryland schools in mathematics and reading in the year of selection.

Category 2 includes schools that are “beating the odds” in improvement or in above average achievement in the year of selection, often demonstrating dramatic gains in mathematics and reading. These schools must be in the top 40% of all Maryland schools in their category and must reflect a substantial number of economically or other disadvantaged populations. The percentage must represent a certain population of the student body that come from economically challenged families and most likely receiving a discounted or free-lunch program.

The schools will receive their blue ribbon November 10th and 11 in Washington.

The top county in the state of Maryland that holds the highest number of blue ribbon schools is Baltimore County so when moving to Maryland or looking to locate to a better school district, consider Baltimore County or one of the other top schools on the list.

Multi-generational living is on the rise. In 2012, a record 57 million Americans lived in a multi-generational family household, double the number who lived in such households in 1980.

The arrangement of having multiple generations together under one roof increased during the recession of 2008 and has continued to grow in the post-recession period. Young adults are more likely to live in a multi-generational household than older adults.

Is this kind of household right for you or your family when moving to Maryland? There are a few factors to consider before deciding to live in a multi-generational household.

Before sharing a multi-generational home, you’ll want to have a discussion on the expectations and responsibilities before the move. Decide who is going to pay each bill for current and future expenses. What rules do you need to establish for laundry, television, cleaning, or sleepovers? If your parents are moving in, discuss parental responsibilities with other siblings. Determine who will provide care for your parents and help pay their bills. It is also important to estimate the cost of home improvements that include age-friendly and privacy features such as grab bars or separate space for additional family.

Even though it takes preparation to move into a multi-generational household, it might make financial and economic sense. Sharing a home and having every member help each other out one way or another, may well be worth it!

Starting on Friday, the Mount Washington, Cold Spring, and Woodberry rail stations will be closed for three weeks. These stations will be undergoing emergency repairs to resolve a soil erosion issue that has appeared along the tracks in North Baltimore.

These closures come at an inconvenient time for the city, as the summer months are busy with downtown activities like baseball and 4th of July celebrations, which would only add to the 25,000+ daily riders who move to and from the downtown area. Many residents in North Baltimore are frustrated with the news and frequent closure of the tracts that delay and hinder people getting into Baltimore.

Part of the rail that runs along 26th street has already been closed since April due to a collapsed retaining wall in Charles Village. Plus the rains that have been flooding the area, this latest rail closure is yet another burden on people in the Baltimore area. Though the city offers many alternatives to the rail, it is still frustrating to many citizens as the repairs, and the costs, continue to pile up.
